The Eco Trail is work in progress but there are elements of it around the site. Please ask at reception for details.
Here at Green Dragon we promote sustainable living and are a working showcase of the use of renewable energy, waste management and sustainable systems backed up by our own site resources. We have forty-four acres, consisting mostly of grassland which is used for grazing and haymaking with fruiting hedges and willow windbreaks, including two ponds and a reed bed. The rare breed farm animals are farmed for meat production and there is a walled garden and orchard for fruit and vegetables. Buildings are equipped with renewable technologies, some of which are on display.
The Eco Trail begins in the Eco Centre, a barn built from sustainably-sourced timber that is run using a variety of renewable technologies: biomass, photovoltaics, and solar panels. Rainwater is harvested to flush the toilets and the waste is processed by the reed bed. The trail continues in the Messy Play Barn with our ‘Everything under the Sun’ display which gives visitors the history of energy sources. The walled garden, where we grow fruit and vegetables for use in our cafés, is equipped with a greenhouse, aquaponics system, solar water pump, compost area and a small greenhouse made from plastic bottles, which is work in progress.
Future plans are to extend our showcase of renewable energy systems and include a number of interactive artefacts to the trail.
