Reindeer, also known as Caribou in North America, live in the wild in the northern most parts of the globe, in Alaska, Canada, northern Europe and northern Asia. Reindeer can live in tundra, woodlands and mountains and often have a very large home range, up to 190 square miles. They can migrate huge distances travelling up to three thousand miles in search of the best grazing.
They have a warm and insulating coat to protect them from the extreme cold and large hooves to prevent them from sinking into the snow. Every year all reindeer, both male and female of any age, grow a new set of antlers.
Many native Arctic human societies rely on the reindeer for food, clothing and material for shelter. Some scientists believe that reindeer were they first animals to be domesticated thousands of years ago.
